2018 Workshop series
The following sessions are offered as part of California State University Fullerton's Inquiry and Innovation Professional Learning Series for Teachers. These hands-on and interactive workshops are free of charge to Orange County Teachers, and each session is collaboratively developed and facilitated by local teachers and faculty members.

How do we amplify students’ voices using technology at school and home? Join us for an interactive exploration of culturally sustaining ways to use technology to promote student voice, academic learning, and educational equity within and beyond the classroom. Participants will leave the workshop with print and electronic resources to use in their classrooms, and new strategies to build more creative and dynamic learning environments. Designed for TK-12 teachers of all disciplines, with emphases on both special and general education.

In this session, teachers will explore ways to build community, nourish academic growth, and address conflict in K-12 classrooms and schools. Attendees will learn and practice techniques for supporting critical literacy, effective communication, problem solving, and restorative justice, and leave the session ready to try out new pedagogies in their classrooms. Designed for TK-12 teachers of all disciplines, with emphases on both special and general education.

California classrooms are home to a growing number of newcomer and emergent bilingual students. In this session, participants will explore interactive, multilingual, and arts-based strategies for affirming literacy development among linguistically diverse students, focusing on how to leverage students’ multiple literacies to explore identity, build community, and support disciplinary learning. Throughout the session participants will deepen their fluency in cutting-edge research regarding biliteracy; explore and practice linguistically affirming pedagogy; identify grade- and discipline-specific linguistic challenges, opportunities, and resources; and develop curriculum and tools for use in their own classroom. Designed for mono-and multilingual TK-12 teachers from all disciplines; content areas of emphasis include language arts and literacy, social science, and visual arts.

In this session, participants will examine theoretical frameworks for and curricular examples of socially just K-12 science education. Participants will work in small grade level groups to analyze the standards and curriculum, brainstorm possible lessons applying Bree Picower’s 6 Elements for Social Justice, and present their ideas for feedback. Participants will leave the session with example lessons, curricular resources, and experience in the process of developing culturally sustaining lessons for their own classrooms.

In this session, participants will examine strategies for engaging culturally, linguistically, and academically diverse students in standards-aligned conversations about complicated, complex and controversial disciplinary topics. During this hands-on session, participants will create and analyze examples of high- and low-tech literacy projects, including pod and vodcasts, stop motion animation videos, PhotoVoice narratives, and community-based inquiry projects. Participants will leave the session with print and electronic resources, as well as concrete plans for classroom implementation. Designed for K-12 teachers from all disciplines; student work samples are from middle and secondary literacy, social studies, and science classrooms.

In this session, teachers will engage in art activities that integrate with topics of just, equitable, and inclusive education. In particular, through art integration, participants will discover how art engagement is a catalyst for fostering a safe and effective learning environment. Time will be dedicated to reflecting on classroom practices and strategies to include art as a learning tool throughout instruction.
